Does Waterproof Spray Work on Running Shoes?

Yes, waterproof spray can help running shoes resist rain, splashes and damp conditions.

But it will not make an ordinary running shoe fully waterproof.

Think of it as extra water resistance rather than a complete waterproof barrier.

What Does Waterproof Spray Actually Do?

Waterproofing sprays usually add a water-repellent treatment to the outside of the shoe.

That can help water bead up and roll off instead of soaking straight into the upper.

It can be useful for:

  • light rain
  • wet grass
  • splashes
  • damp paths
  • general winter wear

What it cannot do is seal every part of the shoe.

Water can still enter through mesh, seams, the tongue area or over the top of the shoe.

Will It Make Running Shoes Fully Waterproof?

No.

If a running shoe was not designed with a waterproof membrane, spraying it will not suddenly turn it into a waterproof shoe.

It may help it cope better with light moisture, but prolonged rain or very wet ground will eventually get through.

If you regularly run or walk in genuinely wet conditions, a purpose-built waterproof shoe will usually be the better option.

Is Waterproof Spray Worth Using in Ireland?

It can be.

Irish weather means running shoes often end up dealing with wet pavements, damp grass and muddy paths even when you are not out in heavy rain.

A suitable waterproof spray can give ordinary shoes a little more protection and may help stop the upper becoming saturated as quickly.

It is most useful when you want extra protection, not when you need proper waterproofing.

Does Waterproof Spray Work on Every Running Shoe?

Not necessarily.

Running shoes use a mixture of mesh, synthetic fabrics, leather, suede and specialist materials.

Always check that the product you are using is suitable for the shoe material first.

Some treatments can also change the appearance or feel of certain fabrics, so testing a small area is sensible.

Does Waterproof Spray Affect Breathability?

Potentially.

Using too much product or repeatedly coating breathable mesh can reduce airflow.

That is another reason not to keep layering spray onto the shoe.

Use the amount recommended by the manufacturer and allow it to dry properly before wearing the shoes.

How to Apply Waterproof Spray to Running Shoes

Start with clean, dry shoes.

Remove loose mud and dirt, then allow them to dry naturally.

Apply the spray evenly from the recommended distance rather than soaking one area.

Then leave the shoes somewhere well ventilated until completely dry.

Avoid putting them directly beside a radiator or strong heat source.

How Often Should You Reapply It?

There is no fixed schedule because it depends on the product and how often the shoes are used.

If water stops beading on the surface or the upper begins absorbing moisture much more quickly, it may be time to reapply.

Always follow the instructions supplied with the spray.

Waterproof Spray or Waterproof Running Shoes?

This really comes down to how wet your normal routes are.

If you mostly run on roads and just want some added protection from rain and splashes, waterproof spray may be enough.

If you regularly deal with wet grass, muddy trails and saturated ground, proper waterproof running shoes make much more sense.

The Bottom Line

Waterproof spray works, but only up to a point.

It can make running shoes more resistant to light rain and splashes, but it cannot replace the waterproof membrane found in shoes designed specifically for wet conditions.

Use it as extra protection, not as a way of turning a normal running shoe into a waterproof one.
